Why are Beneficial Ownership and Financial Disclosures important to fight corruption?

Beneficial Owners (BO): These are natural persons who ultimately benefit from the income and assets of a company or who own or control said company.

Financial Disclosure (FD): Refers to a system in which public officials are required to periodically declare, through affidavits, information about their assets, income, business activities, interests, etc.

Politically Exposed Persons (PEPs): These are people who carry out or have carried out important public functions (for example, presidents, ministers, legislators, judges, etc.) and, in this sense, are considered to run an increased risk of engaging in corrupt activities, money laundering, and other actions that hinder transparency and accountability.

Now, the question is: What do we do when we don't have access to Financial Disclosures or to a Financial Disclosure (FD)?

In the case of Nigeria, our first challenge was not having access to Financial Disclosures or to a Financial Disclosure (FD). We had to overcome this issue searching for information on websites, always keeping in mind the reliability of the data, because for JTD one of the main goals is to verify that the person who appears as a beneficial owner is the same person who appears in a PEP database.
