Initial Findings
To address unavailability of data, information was collected from a vast array of sources such as the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI), Citizen Science Nigeria, Open Sanctions and Shine your eye.
Missing information such as PEP and BO date of birth, gender and age required the implementing organizations to do manual research. Furthermore, in some cases BO data showed numbers exceeding ‘100%’ of share ownership.
Furthermore, working with a variety of sources meant that our team had to standardize the data in order to detect missing information and proceed with its cross-matching. As a result of the whole process, 582 alerts were found:
Potential conflict of interest alert:
- 455 Alerts #1, indicating such number of PEPs possibly being a beneficial owner of a mining, oil or gas company registered in the Nigerian state. Out of them, 5 might be beneficiaries of companies that hold contracts with the State.
- 11 Alerts #2, indicating such number of PEP relatives possibly being a beneficial owner of a mining, oil or gas company registered in the Nigerian state. Out of them, 3 might be beneficiaries of companies that hold contracts with the State.
